In 1976, Elizabeth Braund purchased a working hill farm on Dartmoor. She called it a lung for the city. Elizabeth had spent years running Providence House in Battersea - a community organisation for young people growing up in south London. She felt strongly that those young people were missing something: a connection to nature, to the land, to a world beyond the city streets.

So she bought a farm.

Fifty years later, Shallowford is still here. Still welcoming young people from urban communities. Still run on the same belief that getting your hands in the soil, caring for an animal, getting close to nature and sleeping somewhere quiet, does something for a young person that nothing else quite can.

To celebrate this 50th anniversary milestone, we are organising a number of events to promote our work in welcoming children and families to enjoy all that Shallowford Farm has to offer in the heart of Dartmoor.

This includes a 5 day challenge, 50 miles a day over the hills of Dartmoor, linking many of the schools who visit us, and partners who support us. Please sponsor us and help raise funds to support up to 180 children stay for 4 nights at Shallowford Farm.
