Story

TWO girls aged ten and one have lost their “utterly devoted” parents after a horrific head-on car crash with a “drug” driver in a van Last night

Robert, 36, and Paula Bateman, 35, died at the scene of the shocking collision last night on the A142 between Chatteris and Mepal just after 8pm.

Their two daughters Lexi, 10, and Elizabeth, 18-months, were both in the car during the horrific crash and were rushed to hospital after Lexi suffered serious injuries.

Both children have now been discharged

Their devastated family paid tribute to the parents and said they would be "missed by everyone".

In a heartfelt tribute, Bob and Paula’s family said: “We are utterly devastated by this news.

“Bob and Paula were much-loved friends to many and will be missed by everyone who knew them.

They were also utterly devoted parents. Bob was a much-loved son and father, while Paula was a much-loved daughter, sister and mother.

Police said the driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. The 32-year-old man, from Lincoln, failed a roadside drugs wipe and suffered minor injuries.

He remains in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough.

Police have urged for witnesses who saw the collision or the vehicles in the lead-up to it - or have dash cam footage of it - to come forward.
