Story

This page is set up in memory of our Amazing Zach...The boy who smiled! 💕 We are intending to raise money for a Beautiful Sensory Garden in his memory at Stenson Fields Primary School where it will benefit all the children for many years to come. He loved to read and we are hoping this place will be a beautiful setting for his friends to play, learn and enjoy, whilst keeping his beautiful memory and legacy alive forever. 💕💚🧡

The post below is what we had originally posted on Facebook in October 2019. It tells the story of Zach’s amazing strength, resilience and courage, and why we are raising money to create this beautiful space at his school in his memory. We have also set up a Facebook page called The Zachariah Mughal- Martin Foundation, it will share all fundraising events and dates, so please follow us @ShareASmileForZach. We are hoping to continue fundraising efforts after the Sensory Garden, which will go towards setting up a foundation in his memory to help young children and their families going through cancer treatment in the UK. Thank you for your support in advance.

It’s been two months since our darling Zach left our arms, this was his favourite time of the year, which makes us miss him more than we already do. I know it’s taken me a while to say something but I haven’t had the strength...I’m writing this for our beloved Zach and for everyone to know what he went through, these words are coming straight from a heartbroken mum. For the past 3 and half years this brave little superhero had been battling with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He was diagnosed at just 2 years old in November 2015. It devastated and impacted the whole family emotionally, financially and put all our future hopes on halt. You don’t ever think that it could happen to you. The words your son has cancer is something you never forget, but out of that sadness, the fact he fought with such courage and absolute resilience, gave us our strength and he became our inspiration. We made sure each moment was special and never took a day for granted. We are in awe of how much he had to overcome and he did it all with a smile and a giggle that would melt your heart - he lost his hair, had countless hospital trips, needles, chemotherapy, the sickness was unbearable at times, he learned medical words that no 3 year old should know, he had a Hickman line that he called his wigglies...he learned to live with and had even given them names, he had daily oral chemotherapy, weekly bloods and monthly steroids. Every temperature spike meant a trip to QMC, even in the early hours...he never complained and he was most definitely a frequent flyer but he battled on, he went to school, he enjoyed playing and embraced every part of life with an amazing burst of enthusiasm, his hair grew back, he was in remission and we were very optimistic and hopeful that all was going well.

Then just 2 months away from finishing his long treatment, we received the devastating news that Zach had relapsed. It’s was just 2 days after his 6th birthday...he had to go through more intensive chemotherapy and lost his hair again, but still had a smile...we were lucky in achieving remission once again. His chance of a cure now was a bone marrow transplant, unfortunately his siblings were not a match, so we were in a race against time to find a match on the register. We knew chances of finding a mixed heritage donor are not as great.

Luckily we were able to find a match after an agonising wait and Zach was giving his second life line...thanks to someone amazing on Anthony Nolan. He went through a gruelling 4 month in isolation at Birmingham Children Hospital. He came across every hurdle but battled on with the such stoicism...it was was the hardest thing we have witnessed to date, although he had battle scars he made it through a successful transplant and finally got to ring the end of treatment bell, that he was so cruelly robbed of. We will cherish that moment forever. He was able to come home to spend time with his family and sleep in his own bed once again...Unfortunately very shortly after, he became unwell with an infection, it all became too much, and our little gift returned to God, his last words to me was “I Love You”.It has been so difficult to comprehend that he had gone through everything, and was clear of any cancer and was given a second chance of life, only to lose him so suddenly and unexpectedly. My heart absolutely aches.💔 Losing a child/brother is grief I wish no one has to go through. Not being able to watch him grow up, go through school, college, university, getting his first car, getting married, having his own family, all the future hopes and aspirations all lost in a moment...We will never get over it, but heartbreakingly, we will have to learn to live with. Please bare with us all, it will take time, thank you to all of those who have supported Amelia and us so far. He was everything to us, words can not explain the love we had for him, our amazing, kind, clever, sweet Zacharoo. 💕 This little angel really was too good for this Earth and we were lucky and blessed to have had him in our lives.

We are forever grateful to all of those wonderful people who have stood by our sides through this journey, no matter how hard it got. Thank you for all your support then and now...Zach knew exactly who loved him and for those people, he will stay in their hearts forever! A huge thank you to all the amazing Friends, Family and School community, who raised money for Zach whilst he was in transplant. He was so thankful, so were we!

Everybody who met him would tell you, how loving, caring and thoughtful he was, he was unforgettable and filled a place in your heart as soon as you spoke with him. He touched so many lives and made you a better person for it. He loved reading books, warm snuggles with Mummy and flying hugs with Daddy, being read to and tucked in like a burrito at night with his Auntie Mimi, Nanny’s special foot massages and chicken soup!...He loved being with his family, movie/games nights, popcorn, pancakes, the seaside, the solar system, celebrating, dancing, being a big brother to Noah and his best friend in the whole world was his big sister Amelia...he was a loveable, cheeky 6 year old.

The one thing that everyone remembers about him was his infectious giggle and his beautiful smile. He smiled through it all...So we will make sure his memory will live on with things we have planned, including raising money for the sensory garden in his memory at Stenson Fields Primary School, for all the children to enjoy - a place to read books and to remember their special friend. 💕

We are forever grateful that we were able to create such beautiful memories with our beautiful Zach, we never took a day for granted. We miss you with every breathe darling and there is not a moment that goes by where you are not in our thoughts. We will love you forever and always and will continue to celebrate your bravery, your strength, your amazing smile. ❤️ The video below and the music (“A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri) just sums up the way we felt about gorgeous little you. 💕

Please pass a smile in honour of our gorgeous Zach and if you can, sign up to DKMS or Anthony Nolan, especially if you’re Mixed heritage or from the Asian community, it is a simple painless swab and if you are a match, you would donate the same way as you would with donating blood. Cancer devastates...please keep families together. 🤲🏼🙏🏽
