I have Stage 3 Lipoedema throughout my body, making it difficult to walk and to work. But I've always worked despite the gruelling pain I experience every day just trying to do normal things like going up and down stairs, standing and running my home. My condition has caused osteoarthritis in my knee joints which are now really struggling. Without this vital surgery, I may soon be unable to work - I do NOT want that to happen. I can't now earn my pilot's licence as my illness has made further flying lessons too painful. My condition has deteriorated significantly this past year and I've had to defer my place on a further PhD in Neuroscience. I need surgery urgently.
I first went to the doctor over 30 years ago and have been back many times without getting the right help. I was finally diagnosed in September this year after my own research led me to the information I needed.
I've raised 2 children alongside working full-time my entire adult life. I had a successful 30 year career in education, advising government bodies and completing my doctorate in 2007 (at my own cost). After 10 years as a headteacher, I had to give up my job in 2010 due to poor mobility, unremitting severe workplace bullying and a traumatic physical assault. I used all my savings to retrain as an NHS child & family psychotherapist to keep working. I've saved the NHS many thousands of pounds by providing therapy to fostered & adopted children in London on a voluntary basis for 3 years, even paying my own travel costs. I now volunteer in the British Red Cross.
Lipoedema is a genetic condition that makes the adipose fat cells in my body multiply and grow unrelentingly, through no fault of my own. This makes me look hugely 'fat' but I have always eaten healthily and moderately (1000-1500 calories per day) and I exercise as much as I can, having hired a personal trainer 3 times weekly since January. Nevertheless, I continue to become fatter and am subjected to cruel taunts every day. Thank you.

Today I had a kind donation offline for £1000 - so this makes me now at 12% of my target. I feel so humbled.

Some days I'm finding it really hard not to mourn the life I could've had with a non-lipoedema body, but I'm working hard to focus on the opportunity ahead of me now that I finally know what is wrong with me and how to fix it. I am beyond grateful for the very generous donations to my justgiving page. You are literally giving me a second chance at life. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you Xxx

I've always given my time and care to others, so asking for help is hard for me to do. Lipoedema is recognised by the NHS but they will not fund or provide the surgery or MLD they say is needed. Getting rid of my painful lipoedema will cost me almost £60k - just to be normal!
