Story
In 2020 after 3 years of investigations Lola-May at 16 years old was diagnosed with a Tumour on her spine – An Intradural Extramedullary Tumour which was wrapped around her nerves and spinal cord. Without surgery the tumour would continue to grow and inevitably cause paralysis with loss of use to the legs, bowel and bladder. The only treatment for this type of tumour is surgery. Lola was admitted to Addenbrookes in Cambridge where she spent nearly three months with two major spinal surgeries. This has left her with neurological loss and impaired sensation/feeling in her lower body, legs and feet. Due to the location of the tumour and risks surgeons removed as much of the tumour as was safe to. Several small fragments were unfortunately too dangerous to remove. After surgery Lola received daily Physio in Addenbrookes to aid her to sit and walk again. A set back came when after two days of returning home she developed Sepsis and was re admitted to resus in Addenbrookes followed by a third surgery through the night and then days in the Critical Care Unit on a 2 to 1 watch. Due to Covid restrictions Lola’s parents were only allowed to be with her one at a time during her time in hospital. Under the watchful eye of her surgeon, her oncologist and neurology team Lola has slowly recovered to a point where she was finally able to begin college in September. Unfortunately last month at her latest MRI check up it has shown that the tumours have grown significantly and others developed higher up her spine too. After many meetings, scans and samples sent for analysis Lola will now be heading to Addenbrookes for 7 weeks for daily radiotherapy. This treatment will not shrink them but hopefully slow their growth. Lola will be moving with mum/dad to Cambridge to ensure she has a comfortable place to rest during this time and where she can make the best of Christmas and her 18th birthday. Come January they hope to know the next steps.
