    Story

    Shazzy Rides For Calzy

We are humbled and so grateful to Shaz Ali - an awesome young person who has volunteered to cycle 300 miles on his static bike in order to raise funds for The Calzy Foundation.

    The Calzy Foundation

We are a tribe of energised and impactful young activists who have been deeply affected by the mental health crisis and we’re ready to create the change that our policymakers are failing to put in place for us. Impacted by the loss of Cal Stuart in January of 2021, we are the voice of a young generation, calling out for peer-to-peer support for those affected by trauma, crisis and the impact of mental illness. We represent and embody Cal and his vision of a better world through our three core objectives:

    - Providing more accessible and visible peer-to-peer support for young adults suffering trauma or crisis in their mental health and impacted by peer suicide through our programme of Mental Health First Response Training

    - Forcing the agenda via dedicated campaigns, on dissolving the stigma within young adults around talking about or seeking support for mental health.

    - To campaign for the UK Govt to establish a distinct three-digit emergency mental health number, operated and staffed by professional mental health practitioners, providing an emergency triage and support service referral provision - 365 days a year - 24hrs a day - 7 days a week.

Shaz (Shazzy) reached out to The Calzy Foundation and offered to raise funds through completing a 300 mile cycle challenge:

’When I heard Cal’s story - it really resonated with me and genuinely touched my heart. He was only 23 yrs old - and as a young adult who has also suffered my own mental health issues - I felt compelled to do something to help raise awareness around mental health and the impact of suicide within my generation.

My own mental health challenges are rooted in cultural and family lack of understanding regarding my sexuality. This has resulted in me reaching some very low points in my life. I want to do what I can to help prevent the increasing rate of suicide in young people and that is why I have partnered with The Calzy Foundation on this personal challenge.

I love exercise and cycling but have never attempted this level of mileage - so PLEASE support me on my challenge - and you will be supporting the amazing work that The Calzy Foundation does on behalf of our young generation.

ALL of the funds raised by Shaz will be used to provide Mental Health First Response Training to our Calzy Foundation youth board and other young adults who reach out to us for support.

We will provide weekly updates on Shaz’s progress through the challenge (1st Sept - 30th Sept) and will be encouraging as many people as possible to share his awesome endeavour.

About our Mental Health First Response Programme

The Calzy Foundation is now fully funding places on a Mental Health First Response course - through fund-raising activities such as this. The programme is particularly aimed at those impacted by peer suicide. MHFR is a unique training in Mental health first aid and combines a practical approach to mental health first aid training with up to date advice, strategies and guidance. This course was created on the back of the COVID crisis and builds on other excellent mental health first aid training courses offered around the UK. It has been updated to include current statistics, coping mechanisms, tools and resources to support those suffereing from loss of a friend to suicide.

Each place on the MHFR Training costs £100 - so YOUR donation will make a REAL difference to young people suffering mental health trauma and crisis and may have been impacted by peer suicide.

Successfully completed my 300 mile bike ride on Monday 19 September 2022. I will continue to cycle until the end of September to raise more money. I feel loved and appreciated with the amount of support I have received from everyone. You have motivated me to complete my goal of 300 miles. Without your love and support, none of this would have been possible. We have so far raised £872.00 for the Calzy Foundation and I thank each one of you who have supported me, including those who shared my fundraiser amongst their friends and family.

At the end of day 5 of my challenge, I have successfully completed 71.66 miles. For those of you who don’t know, I am cycling 300 miles throughout the whole of steptember to raise funds for the Calzy Foundation. I have put together a routine for myself to help me manage my cycling sessions. I am currently cycling twice a day, and each session lasts between 45 - 60 minutes. Thank you for taking the time to read my update :)

From Shaz: A massive thank you to everyone who has donated to this wonderful cause so far. We have reached our target, but there is still so much we can do. Tomorrow is my first day of this challenge and I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be up at 05:00 am to do an hours worth of cycling, before getting ready to head to Campus. We at Calzy Foundation are so proud of you Shaz - with you all the way!
