Story

Last week, we were contacted by our vet regarding a male cat called Shelby. Shelby had been abandoned by his owner, just before the recent big storm. The nextdoor neighbour felt sorry for him and allowed him in her house while the storm passed. Afterwards he was put back outside, where he sustained a break to his leg. Nobody knows how he did it. Shelby was taken to the vet and the owner was found and notified. She did not want Shelby back and signed him over to our vet. Our vet was very taken by him as he was a large, soft purring machine, who was also surprisingly calm considering his injury. They began to ring round rescues, etc to see if money could be raised to help Shelby. A larger organisation came forward to contribute £500, which would only pay for amputation of the leg. Our vet felt that the leg could be saved and rang us to inform us of the situation. We felt that if the leg could be saved, then surgery to repair the break was the ethical route. We are extremely low on funds at the moment but we offered to try to raise the remaining money for surgery if, our vet, castrated and vaccinated him at the appropriate time. We were also asked to take Shelby in and find him a home when his leg heals. We do not have room at the moment but did say that if they would agree to board him, at their cost, we would work to make space for him so that he can heal from surgery. This was all at the time when we were preparing to take one of our own rescue cats to a spealist vet, over two hours away. With any broken bone, time is of the essence as if too much time goes by, the bone starts to try to heal and we didn't want it setting out of place. Our vet contacted another vet in Aberysth, who had a slot for the operation, virtually, the next day. Due to me driving our rescue cat, Jess to her appointment, I could not take Shelby or collect him. A very rushed decision was made for one of our vets to take him. This is not something we have done before. We have never agreed to pay for a cat's surgery without first, raising the money. We are not a big organisation, we are just a Mum and daughter. So, we are relying heavily on your generosity to help us raise the funds we need to pay for his surgery, so that Shelby can come into us and heal, surrounded by love and some for of stability until we can find him a wonderful new forever home with a family who will never abandon him again. The surgery has been reduced from £1,800 to £1,600. The larger organisation has put forward £500 and Powy's Animal Welfare have offered to donate £250. This leaves us a balance of £850.00 to settle his bill as soon as possible. Please can you help by donating and if you can't donate, please share. He really is a beautiful boy. Thank you.
