    Story

Shopmobility Dundee is a registered charity (Charity Number SC022975) and was established in Dundee in 1994. It originally started in temporary accommodation in Gellatly Street Dundee, moving to our current purpose-built premises in Overgate Lane Dundee in 2000. It originally operated on a part time basis with a part time manager and a group of volunteers running it. Shopmobility Dundee now has a Board of 7 voluntary directors and employs a manager and two part-time employees. Operating Monday to Friday 9:00 to 4:30pm.

Shopmobility Dundee aims to provide people with disabilities, health and or mobility issues the use of a Mobility Scooter, Power Wheelchair or Manual Wheelchair to allow them to go shopping, see to their affairs such as banking or visit local places like the new V&A Museum and local amenities in and around Dundee City Centre in a safe and accessible way. Users can borrow a mobility scooter, a power wheelchair or a manual wheelchair daily. Manual wheelchairs can also be borrowed for up to a week at a time. The service is free to users, however, we ask for a small donation where possible, for the loan of equipment.

We have many regular service users from the local area, some use it weekly or monthly and we have some clients who use it daily. There is also great demand from service users who visit Dundee from out of town, to shop and visit the local attractions. We receive feedback daily from service users on how much more they have enjoyed the experience, having been able to obtain a loan of a scooter or wheelchair. We are often told that access to our service is life changing due to the accessibility it creates for our service users.

Our equipment gives people access to the attractions and amenities in the City Centre of Dundee. City Council or Banking services are among some of the most important for our customers or perhaps it is simply an opportunity for a much-needed family day out. For elderly visitors, the museums encourage reminiscence and nostalgia whilst a visit with grandchildren can be exciting and educational and the use of our equipment gives them that much desired opportunity for exploring with their children and grandchildren. Our service allows regular users to make weekly social contact with friends they might not otherwise manage to see and for some its simply having the freedom and independence to browse the shopping centres and buy what they need, pay their bills and get their banking in order. Many of our service users are also affected by mental health issues and having access to our service here at Shopmobility Dundee can be the difference between being stuck in the house all week and getting an opportunity to get out for some fresh air and to do something they enjoy whilst interacting with others.

    Testimonials

Olive (Alyth, Perth & Kinross) Customer since 2009 - "without Shopmobility I wouldn't get out to have my catch up with my friends, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened, I would be lost without it!"

Carol (Dundee) Customer since 2017 - “Having access to Shopmobility gives me a sense of freedom, allowing me to get my bills paid and socialise. The staff are lovely and make sure they look after you.”

Mary (Carnoustie) Customer since 2014 - “Shopmobility Dundee allows my sister and I to have a regular day out together. If I couldn’t access a mobility scooter through Shopmobility Dundee I wouldn’t manage any day out. The staff are extremely helpful and polite. Toilet facilities are spotless, it is always well worth any contribution I can make to help keep the service running.”

Morag Noaks (Gauldry) Customer since 1999 - “I have used Dundee Shopmobility for almost twenty years. Shopmobility is conveniently located in the centre of Dundee, making it easy to access all the main shopping centres – Overgate, Wellgate and Murraygate, with Perth Road also being close.

The staff are all courteous, respectful and welcoming, always making every effort to accommodate customers' requirements, whether it is providing a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Shopmobility is a great facility and enables customers to independently access shops, restaurants, etc, in the city.”

Kenny Grant (Perth) Customer since 2000 - “Shopmobility Dundee lets me get out and about to shop for and buy things rather than having to shop online, allowing me to try before I buy. Seeing things in person is important to me and without access to mobility equipment that just would not be possible.”

Maria Hogg (Dundee) Customer since 2003 – “l have used the Shopmobility facilities for many years now. By using this excellent service l have regained my independence and mobility albeit with the aid of a mobility scooter. The staff at Shopmobility are so kind and extremely helpful and all they ask of us is to book ahead by phone. The service is free, but a donation is always most welcome although never "asked for". If nervous about using a scooter for the first time, please don't worry about it as the staff will ensure that you are confident and comfortable with the simple controls before allowing you go off on your own. To sum up in a few words, Shopmobility is now my lifeline to independence and the ability to socialise with friends.”

William Mullen (Dundee) Customer since 2014 - “Shopmobility Dundee is a wonderful service with fabulous staff. The service has been a godsend which allows me to access Dundee town centre either on my own or with my family. It is a brilliant asset to Dundee.”

Bob Whyte (Balmullo) Customer since 2016 – “Having access to the right size of manual wheelchair for my wife’s needs gives us the ability to go shopping and sightseeing which without it my wife would be housebound. The wheelchair is also an essential part of our holidays and is like a member of the family that we would be lost without.”

With your support, you will be contributing to the repair and replacement of essential mobility equipment and or the running costs of the Charity. Shopmobility Dundee relies on the support of generous donations which allow them to continue to provide the service and to maintain the equipment they provide to the highest standard, ensuring user safety.
