Story

Shukri Yayhye Abdi was a beautiful 12-year-old Somali girl that came to the UK as a refugee with her family in January 2017.

Shukri's body was found in River Irwell in Bury, Greater Manchester, on 27 June 2019. A group of children were with her at the river in the period before she died. They can be referred to only as Child One, Child Two, Child Three and Child Four. In December 2020, a coroner concluded that Shukri's death by drowning was an accident. Joanne Kearsley, the senior coroner for Manchester North, concluded that there was no evidence that a child known as Child One had any intention to kill Shukri.

We all were not there, so we will never know until the truth comes out.

However, I can create a park in the remember of Shukri Yayhye Abdi so children have a safe place to play and Shukri Yayhye Abdi's name lives on, and she is not forgotten.

I learnt about Shukri's case whilst studying architecture as I study at The University of Salford, which is connected to the same river Irwell where Shukri drowned in. So I must give back to Shukri's family and the Somali community for dismissing a young child's death without further investigation.

We remember Madeleine Beth McCann...

Well, we will remember Shukri Yayhye Abdi!
