Story

We're a group of Lewes residents who are determined to reduce the noise pollution from the A27.

Let's get an independent acoustic survey and demand action.

The A27 is the most significant source of noise pollution in the town of Lewes. Since the mid 70's when the road was constructed, repeated efforts to get Highways England to take noise reduction seriously have fallen on deaf ears.

An independent acoustic model will show the benefits of a noise barrier and will give us data to show what effect a noise barrier would have. This technical approach will provide the kind of evidence that is needed to persuade Highways England and local government that this is a worthwhile project, one that would greatly improve the environment of our beloved town.

The model will show the effects of a T-shaped barrier in addition to flat barriers of 3 different heights, along the length of the A27 around Lewes.

Your donation will pay for a model of how different designs of barrier would shield Lewes from the noise. Anderson Acoustics will carry out the work, and will also supply accurate noise readings for 3 key locations.

Need to know:

Bypass noise pollutes the whole of the South side of Lewes. It affects some of Lewes' most important civic spaces including the Railway Land, Lewes Leisure Centre, the Priory, the Grange, Southdown Sports Club and Hamsey stables. It is particularly loud for the housing closest to the road and is the dominant sound along Southover High Street and the south facing slope of Lewes.

Residents tell us that this is a growing problem, one which spoils the natural and historic fabric of town. The road dominates the soundscape

Traffic and noise from the A27 is only likely to increase as there are plans to enlarge the road East of Lewes.

The effects of noise pollution are complex, but have been shown to have clear detrimental effects on heart and metabolic health. Read more here: WHO noise guidelines
