    Story

I work with Rob Fisher. Rob gave his bone marrow to save his son Jack. Jack is 3 & he lives with dad Rob, mum Rachel & brother William. Sept 2014 Jack had an infected cyst in lymph node in his armpit & was admitted to Hospital. In 2 months Jack was in & out to drain the wound. 21/11/14 Jack & his family were given the devastating news that he had a rare disorder, Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD). Jack’s immune system doesn’t recognise & fight bad bacteria & infection. Undiagnosed life expectancy is <10 years. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant. Lots of appointments followed whilst searching for a donor match. Only 2 hospitals in the UK carry out the procedure, GOSH & Great North Children’s hospital (Newcastle). A donor match found in Germany was later found to be unsuitable. After more tests Rob was a match for a new type of transplant. This transplant had never been carried out on a CGD patient. 4 weeks later, with no availability at GOSH, the family moved to Newcastle. Jack had intensive Chemo to kill existing bone marrow & immune system. After chemo, & before Jack’s immune system could grow back, he had no immune system. A cold may kill him. This is where the ‘Bubble’ comes in. It’s a completely airlocked sterile room called ‘red isolation’. If Rob’s Bone marrow wasn’t accepted Jack wouldn’t be able to leave. One girl had been in a bubble for 18 mnths! Jack went into the bubble 29/08/15 & had 7 days of chemo. His hair fell out & he was very sick. Rob’s bone marrow was harvested & Jack pressed the transplant button at 5.30pm on 8/9/15. In 2 weeks Rob’s bone marrow was growing. After 6 weeks in the ‘Bubble’ Jack went to purple isolation & to the park for the first time. 2 weeks before Christmas Jack could go home. Jack will always carry CGD. I am raising money for the Fisher’s to say thank you to The Bubble Foundation. This small charity raises funds for the children’s bone marrow transplant unit. It provides everything to support babies & their families
