Story

20 years ago (around 1998) I was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. (AATD or A1AD) In a nutshell the liver produces AAT protein as part of the immune system, with AATD the delivery system for the AAT is faulty, so 85% of the AAT protein gets stuck in the liver. This ultimately causes liver disease and in most cases COPD. COPD (Emphysema) is a progressive lung deterioration disease.

Let's roll the clock forward to June 2015. This was when my life long dream of owning a camper finally came true. Costing £3000 I bought myself a 1991 Renault Trafic camper. After a few attempts at sleeping in it I realised it would be more useful for me as a day van, a camper that I can take to venues, days out etc and use it to lounge about in the comfort of my own space, cooking, making hot drinks and having the use of an onboard lavatory. It is also very useful for transporting my scooter as it easily fits into the side door, thus I can take it everywhere with me, and should I decide to go out and about I can.

The problem now though is that this old 1991 Renault Trafic camper does not have power steering, she (Vera) is a heavy old beast on the front tyres. Initially I coped okay, but over the last 2 years my health has deteriorated somewhat, as has my energy/strength, this means that I am struggling to take her out more and more because of the effort I have to put into parking in tight spots or doing 3 point turns etc.

Fortunately, there is an engineer in Stratford-Upon-Avon who has designed and fitted many old Renault Trafics with EPS (Electric Power Steering). Unfortunately the price is £600 as it involves machining, welding and the fitting of an EPS unit. Reviews from drivers who have had this system fitted have been amazed at how easy it is to drive/steer the vehicle after the system has been fitted. The job itself takes around 4 hours, it would involve driving up and staying in a hotel overnight and then driving back the next day with the job done.

I can cover costs for the travel and overnight stay, but £600 is a lot for me to find in one go, or even over 6 months saving. I love my Renault camper as it makes my life so much better to live, and I would hate to give her up just because I struggle to steer her.

Please help me stay mobile in my camper thus giving me better quality of life?
