Leanda is a 31 year old young lady who lives in Bradford On Avon, Wiltshire, Leanda and her husband have 6 children.
Just a week before finding out they were expecting their 6th child Leanda was diagnosed with a progressive disease called Multiple Sclerosis, an invisible neurological disease of the central nervous system.
Leanda has suffered from this horrible disease in many ways, she suffers from chronic fatigue, blurred vision, brain fog, poor balance, numbness, painful limbs and pins and needles constantly in her hands, she can’t walk very far anymore and needs someone with her most of the time. This disease has progressed over time and is still very much active, the future for Leanda and her family is uncertain and there is a big possibility Leanda will need a wheelchair in the near future.
WHAT HAPPENS IN MS?
In MS your immune system which normally fights off infections, mistakes the protective coating of the nerve which is known as Myelin thinking it’s a foreign body, this then damages the Myelin and exposes the nerve fibres. When the nerve fibres are left without the protective coating they then too get damaged, this then leaves lesions (scars) on the brain and spinal cord which then leads to permanent damage causing disability.
This damage disrupts messages travelling along the nerve fibres which make the body slow to respond or not respond at all.
THERE IS HOPE OF GETTING HER LIFE BACK WITH HSCT
Leanda has hope, she is able to have a procedure called HSCT (HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION) This treatment IS the only existing scientifically proven treatment, currently available that completely halts disease progression!! BUT this is NOT covered by the NHS so Leanda will have to pay to have this done privately in Mexico for a sum of £37,500! Mexico is cheaper than paying £90,000 - £100,000 in the UK!
Leanda will have to undergo an aggressive treatment which will include Chemotherepy which will last for 4-5 days
