    Story

Simply Opera is a dynamic and energetic small opera company based in Cardiff. Our next production is Mozart's 'Così fan tutte' and we are asking for help to fund the necessary costs of this performance. The best and most enjoyable way to do this is to come and see one of the shows!

Simply Opera was founded in July 2014 with the aim of providing an environment where young professional singers, directors and conductors have the opportunity to learn and perform key works in the operatic repertoire. We strive to create opportunities for emerging artists to experiment musically and dramatically with core roles that are integral to any operatic CV in productions that are energetic, engaging and, ultimately, entertaining for a wide-ranging audience.

We at Simply Opera feel strongly about treating our artists as young professionals both in what we expect from them and what they can expect from the company. We understand that there is no such thing as "the finished article" and that you never stop learning from your own experiences and those of your colleagues. However, we expect our artists to do their best and to be an active part of the creative process.

One thing that, perhaps, sets us apart from other similar companies is our approach to language in opera. We feel it is very important to help young professionals cross the vital but often challenging milestone of performing complete operatic roles in their original language. This is something that any serious young singer considering an operatic career must do. This, obviously, places greater demands on our artists than some other young companies but, we think, leads to greater study of the score and a greater understanding of the opera you are performing.

Our production of 'Così fan tutte' is taking place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th November 2017. Our fantastic cast consists of artists from in and around Cardiff, many of whom are current students or graduates of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. This is an exciting and sparkling production, set in a bar in the 1920s, conceived by our young director Lydia Stevens and musically directed from the piano by Benjamin Pinnow. As our name suggests, Simply Opera prides itself on productions that are simple, focussing on the characters, relationships and beautiful music in the score. However, every production unavoidably has expenses that have to be met. In our case, the hiring of the YMCA Theatre in Cardiff, the costs of our publicity and our limited costumes and set. We currently receive no outside funding or sponsorship and certain costs must be paid upfront.

All companies must work hard to raise capitol and we are still in the early days of our existence. Anything you feel able to donate will not only be greatly appreciated but go a long way to supporting and encouraging some wonderfully talented and hard working young artists take these important first steps towards a fulfilling, long career on the operatic stage. We hope to then see you in the audience for a wonderful night of opera!
