Story
Shaan Devnani is my dear friend Jess's husband. Two years ago, just after their son's first birthday, he was diagnosed with ALS, a type of Motor Neurone Disease that gradually leads to all the muscles stopping working.
Shaan's courage and determination is unbelievable: he is a fighter and doing an amazing job of remaining upbeat, being a father, husband and still going to work every day in his electric wheelchair. He uses voice recognition software but will soon need to rely on software that recognises the movement of his eyes.
Jess and Shaan recently moved into a bungalow to make life easier, however they need an adapted bathroom and various ceiling hoists to help him and Jess cope with his physical deterioration at home. They have their own Crowdfunding page: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/bathroomforshaan which has far exceeded their expectations and original hopes for adapting their home but I'd like to help them go that bit further.
To retain his dignity, Shaan has set his heart on a disabled toilet that will wash and dry him but, like many things for disabled people, these are shockingly expensive (circa £3000)! He and Jess are not eligible for financial help from the authorities so long as he is still working - he loves what he does and wants to keep his mind sharp. I am also concerned about them having to put so much of their savings into expensive adaptions that were unforeseen three years ago.
As a close friend of Jess and Shaan I am determined to help fund Shaan's loo. I am joining Shaan and a number of his friends this coming Saturday in Hyde Park for a sponsored run where I aim to Skip-to-Shaan's-Loo (run/skipping a 10km with my rope!).
If you are able to contribute to funding a special toilet for Shaan, any donations will be most gratefully received.
