Story
SKRUM's challenge is that Swaziland has the world's highest known rate of HIV/AIDS infection - 28% of the 1,200,000 population. The average life expectancy is 51 and 24% of all children between the age of 0-17 are orphans and 45% are classed as orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs).
SKRUM's mission is to engage the youth of Swaziland in the sport of rugby, at the same time educating participants about HIV/AIDS, inspiring better leadership in communities, reinforcing positive attitudes about gender and cross-gender relations and promoting the benefits of school and education through rugby's core values: respect, discipline, passion, solidarity and integrity.
These values are replicated within the values of our co-operative values, that as a school we live and breath. To do this effectively we support charities and good causes in our community, locally, nationally and in this case internationally. Our relationship with SKRUM started over a year ago when we showed our support in having their logo on our sports tour shirts, however we are now offering a very different mechinisum of support.
9 of our students have developed an ambasodorial programme with the aim to raise the profile of and funds for the charity. Along with staff they are raising money to travel to Swaziland to offer first hand help to their international peers by building water harvesting systems, digging and planting orchards, coaching young people and educating them about HIV/AIDS.
We have also partnered with a community rugby club Brixham RFC who will be donating playing and training kit to the charity as well as sending representitives over to Swaziland to participate in the above named projects.
There will be a number of fundraising events being held by both Tavistock college and Brixham RFC which will feed into this fundraising page and we will keep the page updated with the promotion and photos from these events.
On behalf of the young people of Swaziland and all at SKRUM we would like to thank you for whatever donation you can make to our crowdfunding page.
