    Story

Snakebite is one of the worse emergencies one can experience. I work at SDA Hospital in one of the rural areas in Ghana. The main occupation of the peoples in that community and the surrounding communities is farming. The incidence of snakebite is very rampant and due to ignorance of the local folks, they indulge in various dangerous first aid practices in an attempt to save their victims but usually ends disastrously. Most people in developed countries and even those in urban areas of developing countries may not fall victims of snakebite but our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, children and friends in the rural areas always fall victims. One sad experience I had this year was on 18/7/2017. A 53year old farmer was rushed into our facility with a swollen leg suspected to be a snakebite. All the signs and symptoms proved that it was a viper bite but due to bad first aid practices and delays caused by the victim's family, complications sets in and was referred. The leg of this family man was eventually amputated. Can you feel the agony of this man and his family? You need to see the lamentations from his wife! It was really pathetic. How can this man provide for his family? Frankly speaking, this is just one of the many victims whose situation could have been avoided. How can we protect others from falling a victim to snakebite? Most of these victims could have been saved through education. I have organized public lecture on snakebite for my immediate community. I also offer counselling on snakebite for patients in our facility. Organizing a comprehensive awareness program on snakebite prevention and management for the rural communities and health facilities will definitely yield a positive results. Provision of protective boots to farmers will also help reduce incidence of snakebite. Also, those living with complications of snakebite eg. amputation, need financial support. With your donations we can save people from snakebite and its complications.PLEASE LET'S SAVE THEM
