Sofia is the beautiful daughter of my very close friends Dave and Emma Barrick (and I'm proud to say my God daughter). Following routine tests they were given news that no parent ever wants to hear. Here is more information written by them;

Sofia's Soldiers are a group of people from all walks of life completing challenges, events, cake sales, charity sports matches, basically anything to raise money for our chooses charities for 2018 CF Trust and CHIEF.

Until April this year we knew very little about Cystic Fibrosis, however with our daughter Sofia's diagnosis at 3 weeks old we have continued to learn more about the condition.

CF is a genetic disorder affecting both the respiratory and digestive systems. It causes infertility and breathlessness. People with CF need combinations of daily physio, antibiotics, multi vitamin supplements, enzymes with food, regular visits to clinics, hospital stays involving IV treatments and in many cases double lung transplants. This is a progressive disorder with no cure. Currently the average life expectancy for someone with CF is just 41 years of age.

Fortunately our daughter has one of the rarest types of CF which entitles her to the 'wonder drug' Kalydeco at the age of 2. Only 5% of CF patients have this mutation making them eligible for treatment. Although this doesn't cure CF, it helps to relieve most of the symptoms of it.
We are so thankful that our daughter can have this ground-breaking and life changing treatment but such drugs are only possible because of continuing research. This is exactly why Sofia's Soldiers are on a mission to raise as much money as possible for these charities who use donations for invaluable research in the hope of one day finding a cure. It also helps develop new medication and treatments that can improve quality and duration of a CF patient's life.
