    Story

You may have heard of the unprecedented number of hurricanes hitting the Caribbean this year. Dominica in particular was ravaged by Hurricane Maria, leaving traumatised communities, damaged buildings, destroyed vegetation and wrecked livelihoods. Have a look at this report from Dominica featured on The One Show on BBC1.

Electricity will not be restored to homes until they have been re-roofed and made safe which means that many will endure long dark nights for many months to come. Please join me in providing one solar light to 100 homes.

These lights will be sourced from Barbados at a cost of £50 for 400 lumens or £70 for 1000 lumens. It would be great if each family could donate, or join together with another family to donate a light for one or more households.

The lights will be distributed by the East Caribbean Conference of SDA Churches who have been active in Dominica since the hurricane, distributing water, food, medical supplies and tarpaulins.

They are also planning a re-roofing project which is due to start in December, and are raising funds separately for building materials.

Your contribution will make a difference!

      Update from the Page owner

I was fortunate to buy the solar lights myself, in Barbados, on route to spending 4 weeks in Dominica in December. 65 homes may seem insignificant against the 20,000+ homes that are without electricity at least until late 2018. But for those 65 homes, the solar lights are very significant. I have had confirmation from the church leaders who organised the distribution that they were given mostly to disabled people. Their lives have been made slightly more bearable. Thanks again for responding to my call for support! Sheryl x

I left Dominica in 1979 after Hurricane David. Schools were closed for the foreseeable future and, like many others, I had to continue school in one of the neighbouring islands. Scenes of Hurricane Maria have brought back awful memories and moved me to help however I can.
