Story

We have already raised around £36,000 on the old page through our friends and family's efforts. For that our family are forever grateful but due to poor admin skills, Hamish forgot to extend the page's lifecycle so we have had to set up a new page. This doesn't change the plan.

On the 28th May 2023 our Mum, Wife, Sister, Grandmother, Aunty, Godmother & friend passed away after a hard fought, 3 year battle with a very rare type of cancer called Goblet Cell Carcinoma (GCC). According to the National Organisation for Rare Disorders an estimated 1 in 2 Million people are diagnosed with GCC.

Our Mum/Sophie was not only a loving wife, a devoted mother to four sons, and a doting grandmother to two grandchildren, but she was also a true friend to many.

Throughout her life, Sophie radiated selflessness and kindness. She possessed an unwavering spirit of empathy, always ready to lend a listening ear or offer a helping hand to those in need. Her heart overflowed with love and her actions spoke volumes about her character. Sophie embodied the essence of what it meant to be compassionate.

In the midst of her love and care for others, life dealt Sophie an unexpected and difficult hand. She was diagnosed with a rare and challenging form of cancer called Goblet Cell Carcinoma. This diagnosis shook Sophie's world, but it only strengthened her resolve to fight for her life and for others facing similar battles.

As Sophie embarked on her journey through treatment and recovery, she discovered a startling truth—research and knowledge about her particular type of cancer were scarce. It was as though she was fighting a silent battle, surrounded by a medical community unfamiliar with the intricacies of her illness. Determined not to be defined by her disease, Sophie demonstrated immense strength, courage and an unwavering ability to live life exactly the same as she had before the disease.

Therefore, to continue her legacy we are making it our mission to raise awareness and funding for research into rare cancers like hers, through the Sophie Fitzpatrick Foundation for Rare Cancers. We envision a world where no one would face the devastating diagnosis of a rare cancer alone, where answers and solutions would be readily available to all who needed them.

Hamish has now completed the mammoth challenge of Running a Half Marathon every week from when Mum/Sophie was placed into Palliative care until the end of the year. 33 Half Marathons in 33 weeks. We then organised the Inaugural One More Run For Mum (1MR4M) which was an unbelievable success with Circa 100 people joining in the celebration for Mum/Sophie's Birthday. Whether people were running the Half Marathon, 10KM, 5KM or simply supporting, the love and support could be felt all around & we raised around £3500. A truly special day.

Several people have got involved in their own fundraising with Max Nolan training for the Paris Marathon which will take place in April and has made amazing inroads with the fundraising & Training.

Oscar's secret challenge is taking shape even with a Torn MCL and surgery taking place in January (He will update everyone as and when he knows more) & Hamish is continuing the running by completing the Malta Marathon at the end of February

If anyone would like to organise their own fundraising events on behalf of the Foundation please reach out at hamishmaxmatthews@gmail.com or drop a message to 07828464435.
