Story
Behind the Scars is an amazing photographic campaign by Sophie Mayanne, a free-lance photographer who simply wants to give ordinary people a platform to embrace their bodies, their scars and the amazing stories that lie behind them.
Every one of the 300 people who have been included so far are all exceptional, unique and have their own special story to tell. They can be heart-wrenching, inspiring, brave, or a simple acceptance of who they are, but everyone will touch you personally.
The momentum so far has been incredible and I want to push this project to new heights, and I can’t do this without your help. I am basically a one-woman band, just me and my camera (my camera is on it's very last legs!)
I give my own personal time to this project freely, but unfortunately studios are not so accommodating!! Each booking costs a minimum of £200 a shoot (UK-based). So I am turning to fund-raising to allow this project to continue to flourish.
The project has had a personal impact on so many people across the globe and captured the hearts of people young and old, as well as an array of media.
My ultimate aim is to create a book. A beautiful finished piece that will be able to offer encouragement to men, women and children of all ages around the world.
All donations will be invested directly in to the project to support studio fees and new shoot dates in the UK and beyond. I have had requests to travel to Europe, US and more - so hope that this page can make that happen!

5 years agoHi Everyone, Thank-you for all your support so far! We have more shoot dates scheduled for October, November and December - and in the New Year I will be looking at giving people who aren't able to travel, more opportunities to take part in the project. Sadly my camera isn't likely to last much longer - but I will keep on shooting as long as it works!

Our daughter, Freya, told us about your fantastic campaign and gave us £50 that she wanted us to donate on her behalf. Freya has her own battle with scars to deal with and so admires peoples courage.
