Story

This is my niece Sophie, she is 7 years old and lives in Corstorphine. Sophie has always been one of the happiest kids you'd ever meet with such an infectious smile!

Sophie started out having pains in her knee which came and disappeared. Something which we were led to believe was growing pains. She had an injury at rugby training on the same leg. A short while later her leg appeared very swollen and was causing her discomfort, she began limping. Knowing something wasn't right Sophie's mum and dad made an appointment for her with the doctor. The doctor referred her to have a scan which unfortunately showed a tumour in her knee called Osteosarcoma. This is a rare type of cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. It also tends to happen most often in teenagers and young adults.

This has been the biggest shock to our family! It still hasn't hit home that this is actually happening!!

Sophie has been undergoing chemotherapy for the past few weeks now, which has caused her to lose all of her hair. Her feet have blisters and are swollen very badly and at the moment she is unable to stand without support. Not only is she dealing with all of this but she also has ulcers in her mouth and throat now. Sophie hasn't always been the best of eaters but this has affected her eating on a whole other level! She has lost so much weight with the chemotherapy, which has caused her white blood cells to be drastically low. This has resulted in her being unable to receive a feeding tube, as the doctors have said if she receives anaesthetic she may not wake up. She's been receiving transfusions to build up her white blood cells and we are currently waiting for a date to get a feeding tube put in for her.

Sophie's journey hasn't been as smooth as we'd hoped. Unfortunately she is picking up loads of infections and fevers and is having to travel back up to A&E to sit and wait for a transfer to her ward. Mum and dad don't drive so have been relying on help and support from family and friends to get them to the hospital. Sophie has been in and out of the High Dependency ward and is very poorly at the moment. She is very tired all the time and sleeps a lot. When she is awake she has FaceTimes with her family and honestly seeing her is absolutely heart breaking! She's not that happy little girl anymore with a smile on her face. I miss that cheeky smile and want to see it on her beautiful face again!

Sophie will undergo surgery in a few months time. There are different procedures that can be done and it's still to be decided on which one will be the right choice for Sophie and her future.

Tracey and Stewart (Sophies mum and dad) have been so strong through all of this! I can't even begin to imagine what they're going through?! I hope I never will! Tracey is one of the strongest women I have ever met! Not only is she supporting Sophie, staying in and out of hospital but she's also supporting two amazing children at home. Sophies big brother Bailey who is 10 years old, he has been very quiet during this time, yet he still puts on a smile for her and tries his hardest to put one on her face. Sophie also has a little sister called Lilly who is 2 years old, thankfully she doesn't understand what's going on.

I have set up this page to raise money for Sophie and her family through this journey. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please help if you can. Even a share of this page would really help!

I ask for one more thing, please keep Sophie in your thoughts and prayers!

Thank you!
