These crowd funder is to raise funds for volunteers in civic associations to provide urgent food and medicine packages in South Africa: www.la-mercy.co.za
Locals in La Mercy are creating Bottles of Hope to help families affected by lack of food supply chain and jobs. Each bottle contains ingredients to feed 4 people. In addition they are distributing R6000 of vegetables weekly to informal settlements - Lungelani and Pholani - and will keep trying to do so for the next few months over winter.
Background: There have been public protests in South Africa (starting July 2021) initiated by demonstrations against the ex-president Jacob Zuma being jailed. These protests were hijacked by political and criminal elements resulting in violence and looting in in Durban and Johannesburg.
Massive warehouses of supplies and goods were looted and burned to the ground, shopping malls looted and destroyed. The supply chain of essential goods heavily disrupted and transport systems ground to a halt.
Unemployment, already at a critical stages due to COVID-19, is now much worse. Families are now starving with no jobs and no food for a week now. The government has been slow to act
