    Story

Southwest Scorpions is a Junior wheelchair basketball club founded in 2008. The club is aimed at children aged 6-18 with all abilities. Scorpions was founded by Ex-Paralympian and assistant coach of the woman's GB team Jen Browning and her husband Mike. Over the past 10 years the club has seen two of the player get selected to represent their country in the GB Under 25's and two other player move abroad to play professionally. Over the years Scorpions has entered multiple junior competition's such as Regional Competitions and the Lord Tavernor's National competition.

Now, for this club to carry on and to be able to help and support the up and coming players the club is in need of funding! To be able to finance the club for the next 12 months we will need £22,105!

Where will the money be spent?

The money will be spent on:

    Wheelchairs - £18,000.00

    Training Kit - £500.00

    Hiring the hall - £4,000.00

    Wheelchairs:

The Basketball wheelchairs are made by RGK and are custom built to fit each player to maximise their performance in training and on court. You can find out more about the chair here:

    Training Kit:

When training it is very important for the players feel comfortable when doing high speed drills. This is why we are designing new kit to make it lighter and easier to push. We will be getting Nike sports so that the quality of the training top is as good as possible. The T-shirt will be a Breathable Short Sleeve Sports T-Shirt meaning it will give the player more flexibility when pushing.

    Hire of the Hall:

So, at this moment in time we are training at Gordano school in Portishead. This has been our home for the past 6 years. We have been very happy here and the amount of space we have is amazing! As well as a new court we also have a storage unit within the building to be able to store all the chairs and basketballs and any other pieces of equipment! At this moment in time we are training at 10am - 12pm. However, in September we will be changing the times to 9am - 12pm. The training session at the moment is split in to two parts:

    10 - 11.30 Beginners

    10- 12 Advanced players

At the moment both teams are having to share one court and it is unfair for the advance players who are trying to progress but who can only use have the court! The plan would be that the Beginners would train from 9am - 10 and then the Advanced players would train from 10 -12. This would mean as coach I will be able to give more time and support individually to each player.

Hi, My name is Simeon Wakely and I'm Head Coach at Southwest Scorpions. I started off as one of the first players. I had the privilege to be coached by Jen Browning and was able to progress in to playing in national competitions and then on to coach the next generation of players
