In May 2017, the Manchester Arena Attack devastated the country. As the community of one rural primary school in Lancashire slept safe in their beds, they were unaware that one of them had become the youngest victim of the attack. Saffie-Rose Roussos was only 8 years old.

Tarleton Community Primary School entered a sustained period of recovery dealing with many issues including press intrusion, traumatised children and worked tirelessly to ensure their children could be children again.

Their headteacher, Chris Upton, is the author of the book Searching for the Sparkle: A School's Journey of Recovery, which provides a unique insight into leading a primary school in the aftermath of a terror attack. Not wanting to profit from the proceeds of the book, Chris set up the Sparkle Bean Trust as he recognised the impact that the donations from strangers had had on allowing him to make decisions and support his school community to recovery. The charity aims to provide grants to primary schools following the sudden death of a pupil, trusting that headteacher to use the funding in the best way they can to support their community in an impossible time.
