    Story

Spencer Hockey Club is an amateur, not for profit sports club based in SW London. The junior section has over 500 members and is run by a large group of volunteers, with a few professional coaches.

In an effort to enhance links with our local community, in September 2019 we started offering weekly hockey coaching free of charge, to children in school year 5 who do not currently have the means to play hockey. Known as Spencer Lynx, the sessions within our programme are built around fun and enjoyment, while at the same time teaching hockey skills and nurturing general sporting ability. Our aim is to inspire the children to play sport throughout childhood and into later life, and our ultimate goal is to provide a pathway into the main Spencer Hockey Club for a number of the Lynx children, and to expand the programme to include more children from a wider range of school years.

Through fundraising efforts to date, plus generous sponsorship from our partners, we have been able to provide all the kit and equipment the children need, including the following: hockey sticks (Y1), individualised mouthguards (Opro), shinpads (AJSports), hockey socks, hockey balls (Total Hockey), bibs, cones, first aid kit and team tops (Blue Orchid Group). We have also paid for professional coaches, including occasional coaching by GB player Rhys Smith, who is an inspirational local figure and a fantastic ambassador for our programme among the wider hockey community.

So far the sessions have been tremendously successful, and over 50 children are now enjoying playing a sport they would never have considered trying until a few weeks ago. One Dad recently commented "A few months ago I knew nothing about hockey. I was a rugby man. Now my son is playing and we all love watching it".

We want to continue offering our current members another year's hockey training, plus extend the programme to other year groups. Every penny raised will go towards these Lynx sessions, so please donate whatever you can. We are extremely grateful for all support.

The first year of our Lynx club ended abruptly, with the outbreak of Covid 19. Our members can't wait to return in September, and have been wonderful during lockdown, participating in various challenges, making a video for the NHS and sharing their own home videos. But seeing the fun the members of Spencer Juniors have had, we'd like to offer some extra coaching to our Lynx children. Our current funds are dedicated to providing our September club, so we are now looking to raise the extra £380 we need to provide one hour of coaching.
