    Story

    Hi there.

For those of you that don’t know me my name is Tim Boyce. I’m a 41yr old husband and blessed father of three crazy kids. Originally from East London then Essex, I have lived in Singapore for just over 7yrs.

So, the tough part of my story……

Much to my continued annoyance, in January this year, I was told something that none of us ever want to hear and that was ‘we’ve found a tumour’.

Within a week that bombshell news was confirmed as stage three rectal cancer. As you can imagine my world was thrown into a spin with all manner of stresses imaginable. There were many tears, lots of very difficult conversations with family and friends back in the UK and here in Singapore and to be completely honest, fear for what this meant for my life.

    And now the positive stuff…..

The tumour was quickly removed and I’m currently going through chemotherapy with everything going well so far. Long may that continue!!

When putting this together I thought long and hard about what I wanted to achieve by sharing my story to which I concluded that I wanted to, if at all possible, raise awareness, give hope and to change the narrative around cancer.

    Awareness

When I was diagnosed I was a 40 year old, pretty fit man following a vegetarian diet. So not what you would consider ‘high risk’, but as a good friend recently told me,

‘It doesn’t always happen to somebody else’.

I only had one symptom and that was a very infrequent and tiny amount of blood in my stool.

Here’s my beet piece of advice I can ever give you.

    LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.

I ignored this for about 3 months. It’s tiny, it’s infrequent, it’s probably nothing is what I told myself. Thank God I didn’t wait another 3 months or more. I know we’re all bad at this but I implore anyone reading (particularly us idiotic men) not to be that person that didn’t get checked.

Our bodies are amazing at flagging stuff that isn’t right. Listen to it. It could literally save your life.

    HOPE & CHANGING THE NARRATIVE

I’m a positive person and I’m blessed to be married to my long suffering wife, Jenny, who’s just as positive. When adversity strikes, and it strikes everyone of us, a positive outlook changes everything. I know it sounds cliched but take it from the man who’s going through chemo, our positive approach to this has made things a hundred times more bearable.

Cancer is NOT a death sentence every single time.

Yes, it’s scary, yes I myself have been petrified about what could happen, but thinking about that doesn’t serve you. This whole situation has been traumatic and continues to challenge me and those around me every week. However, I refuse to allow it to define me. There have been and will continue to be some extremely difficult days, but that doesn’t stop me attacking every chemo week with the same vigour as the last.

What is incredible about facing difficult times in your life is that they teach you just how phenomenal we as human’s can be. With the right approach, determination and drive you can overcome almost anything. Obviously, I’d rather not have to experience cancer to learn about what I have in the tank, but it will sure as hell help me going forward!

That’s really what I want to convey to people. No matter what life throws at you, please never give in. Please never give up from the start because you’re scared. Always keep fighting. Be positive and be confident in yourself. You will be amazed at what you can overcome.

Thanks for reading, thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating and if anyone is going through a similar situation and you need an understanding ear please reach out to me.

    Thanks and much love, Tim.
