Story

Hi, I'm Alex, (pictured above).

In some parts of Ghana, menstrual blood is perceived to be a bad omen and can even be used for rituals against the menstruating woman. In most cultures in the country, women who are on their period are perceived to be impure and sometimes not allowed to appear in public. They are not allowed to cook, pray of even engage in social activities. Another perception is that menstrual blood can weaken both men’s productive and reproductive abilities. Others simply say menstruation is a disease! The challenges girls in rural communities face are numerous and the most disturbing is the fact that they rely on rags and toilet rolls during their period. Girls often fall victims to young men who promise to provide them with their basic needs in exchange for sex and as a result leads to teenage pregnancy with the possibility of acquiring sexually transmitted infections. (STI).

For some months now I have been working on a project aimed at training and educating both girls and boys, ages 10-19 years to help reduce the widespread illiteracy about Menstruation, Teenage Pregnancy, Sexual and Reproductive Health in rural communities and schools. Breaking the myth surrounding Sexual and Reproductive Health and also distributing reusable sanitary pads to the girls.

I hope to cover more grounds to reach more young people in remote areas in Ghana. Monies donated will go a long way in not only ensuring project continuity but also getting every girl in project schools a reusable sanitary pad. It will provide educational materials and training in commercial skills such as beadmaking, soapmaking, etc to serve as stimulants for entrepreneurship which will encourage them to reach their aspirations despite their present conditions.

If you would also like to know more about the project you can connect with me on my facebook page on https://www.facebook.com/alex.anim2

Thank you.
