Story
Hundreds of Ukrainian children have found sanctuary at St Mary’s Ukrainian School in London. St Marys, the only one of its kind in the capital, has opened its doors to refugee children fleeing the atrocities of the Ukraine war. In doing so, we have doubled our intake, and we are running out of space, resources and capacity.
The school is providing a safe haven for these children and their mothers and carers. Many know no English and are facing long delays in securing places in English schools. St Mary’s is a connection to their home and to peers who share a language, Ukrainian heritage and truly understand the grief felt by the Ukrainian community.
The school and its voluntary teachers receive no government funding thus they are wholly reliant on donations to fund hot meals, education and school resources and English language lessons for parents. In response to overwhelming demand, the school has also had to move to larger premises to accommodate the growing number of children. The current school intake has doubled to 600, with around 50 more refugees arriving each week. This number is expected to keep growing as more of the 4 million refugees reach the UK.
St Mary’s School desperately needs £20,000, to get to the end of the 2022 school year to fund:
- Expansion of the school by renting additional premises
- Educational resources and uniforms
- School meals
- Enrichment programme and afterschool activities
- Holiday camps
- Wellbeing support programme for pupils and their families
- English lessons for parents and carers
Your generous donations would enable us to provide support for the most vulnerable. Our children are the future of Ukraine.
History
St. Mary’s Ukrainian School was established in London over 67 years ago and marks a significant historical period in the lives of Ukrainians who came to Britain after the 2nd World War and settled in London. It is a part of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) - the largest representative body for Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian descent in Great Britain. We are extremely proud to be the only Ukrainian educational provider in London with an academic curriculum catering to all year groups from the ages of 4 to 16 years.
