Volunteer Sri Lanka: Working to help poor and disadvantaged children and adults

Through this amazing heart-felt project, my 10 year old son Louis and I would like the opportunity to volunteer in Sri Lanka next summer. After the devastating effects of the 2004 Tsunami, a Sri Lankan man called Janaka has worked hard to fundraise and put back as much as he could into his community. With support from fundraising in Britain, he has been able to build a library in remembrance to all those who lost their lives and he has created the Volunteer Sri Lanka project.

Louis and I hope to work with disadvantaged children in the local community, at local primary schools and in orphanages, teaching them to speak English, running arts and crafts sessions and providing lots of other activities relating to their care and education.

On a personal note I see this as an eye opener and a wonderful opportunity to add to my continued professional development as a teacher. For Louis it will be an experience to see how children live in a culturally different environment. With any luck he will reflect on this and compare a different way of life to his own. For the children and adults of Sri Lanka it will mean absolutely everything.

As with any trip abroad there are costs involved. We really hope to pay for as much as we can but flights aren't cheap. If you could sponsor us, even if it's just a small amount, it would be another step towards making this experience real.
