Story

Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie and I am 17 and currently in Year 13. I will be finishing my A levels this year at a sixth form college in Cardiff, UK. The reason why I have created this funding page is to help cover my expenses to travel to Seoul, Korea, and do a law internship there for six months for a gap year with Asia Internship Abroad. This has so much emotional significance to me because from a young age, I have always wanted the opportunity to travel and study abroad, however, for financial reasons this was never feasible. Before this time in my life, I never thought that I would ever get the chance to do something as life changing as this is for me. Coming from a very humble background, and having immigrated to the UK at a very young age from Nigeria, this kind of prospect seemed very much out of my reach. After going through a major set-back in my university applications for this year, now that an opportunity has come for me to better myself, I want to do everything that I can to attain it.

I truly do have a geniune interest in political, legislative and international affairs, and I know that only an opportunity like going to Seoul to intern in law would allow me to explore my interests and demonstrate my capacity to learn effectively in an entirely new country, culture and foreign environment. This will widen my prospects for the future and allow me to immerse myself in relevant fields intrinsically linked to law, of which I do not have the chance to currently access. Additionally, with the long-term work that I have been doing in the Cardiff Youth Service, which focuses on the advocation and actualisation of young people's rights, I have become passionate in the pursuit of human rights, especially since I come from a country where significant improvement in human rights is needed. Therefore, I do not want to let this passion burn out simply because of some unforeseen circumstances.

Furthermore, I have chosen Seoul as the destination for my internship because I have been studying Korean part-time for over a year and I have reached an intermediate level of fluency that allows me to conduct general conversation. Therefore, going here for six months would also allow me to improve my spoken and written Korean, enabling me to communicate more efficiently whilst I'm the country.

I have already gotten a part-time job to help raise money for this, which will become full time once I finish my A levels. Also, I have been independently raising money to fund my travel through various other methods. The money raised will go towards a return plane ticket, accommodation for the duration of my stay, health insurance, transport once in the country (such as train fare), a visa application, the internship placement, food, basic necessities, further language lessons, utilities, internal travelling, any emergency expenses etc.

Any donations at all would be amazing - no amount is too small and I would greatly appreciate any donations given. I hope that you will support me in my fundraising.

Thank you all very much.
