Story

Young Sudden Cardiac Death (YSCD) is the biggest natural cause of death in the UK of people aged 14-35 years.

At least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people in that age range die in the UK every week.

Around 80% of these fatalities had no prior symptoms.

Around 90% of these younf people ciukd be saved through Cardiac Screening.

At the present time The National Health Service DO NOT PROVIDE cardiac screening unless you are diagnosed or present with symptoms.

The Charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), currently provide a mobile cardiac screening programme throughout the UK.

In February 2019 our Son Nathan died aged 31 years from YSCD. My wife Gill and I found Nathan dead in his bed, a memory that will live with us forever.

In the dark days and months following Nathans death, CRY provided much needed grief counselling for my wife.

In late 2021 we formed a Community Group called “The Beat Goes On” and commenced fundraising to provide cardiac screening for young people in our community.

Our aim is to raise awareness of YSCD and provide funding for cardiac screening for young people aged 14-35 years in our local community. The screening is undertaken by staff from CRY.

In January 2023 in conjunction with CRY we funded 186 Cardiac screeninf appointments for you people from our Community. These Screening sessions covered two separate days at Hope House in Scunthorpe.

Of those 186, young people, 12 were referred for further cardiac investigation. One young woman received devastating news that she had a “hole in the Heart” and would require surgery.

In July 2024 in conjuntion with CRY, we funded a further 205 cardiac screening appointments for young people. 20 young people were referred for further Cardiac investigation.

In association with Cardiac Risk in the Young we will be funding 200 Cardiac Screening appointments in Scunthorpe in May 2025.

These Screenings will be conducted by fully trained Clinicians from Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). Every young person who has a appointment will complete a Private Medical Questionnaire, they will undergo an Electrocardiogram (ECG), a number of young people will undergo an Echocardiogram (Scan of the Heart). Every young person attending will have a private consultation with a Cardiologist from CRY.
