    Story

St Mary’s Church in the Valley at Sandsend has been at the very heart of the community since 1869. Although the regular congregation numbers have declined, St Mary’s is cherished by the whole community and the hundreds who visit each year. For St. Mary’s to continue as an important part of our village, your support is needed.
A recent structural survey has highlighted repairs which will require to be carried out over the next one to two years. Regular income from the congregation and visitors, whilst able to support the annual cost of keeping St. Mary’s open, will not cover structural repairs. Lythe Parochial Church Council (PCC) held a public meeting at St Mary’s on 10th August to explain that unless funds could be raised St Mary’s would close and the building would revert to Mulgrave Estate which owns the freehold. However, if the repairs are carried out, the PCC have confirmed that St. Mary’s will remain open.
On June 14th, 2008 myself and my then Fiancee Judith were married at this beautiful church in the most picturesque setting Sandsend valley.
When we live 80 miles away in West Yorkshire, you may ask why?, well you only have to visit it once and you will realise why.
Judith introduced me to it and told me the story of her childhood dream and after much hard work the rest is history. we call St Mary's "our church" and that is why we want to help this small passionate group of people keep the church going so that our children and grand children can also enjoy its splendour for many years to come.
Please donate, no matter how small and help this church continue to provide peace and joy to the many visitors and the community who worship here.
