Story
Steve was diagnosed in 2018, aged 58, with a rare form of dementia, called Frontal Temporal Lobe dementia. Although the official diagnosis was made in 2018, we believe he may have been suffering for some years before this. The dementia affects the front and sides of his brain, which help to control things like his mood, his behaviour (he may act inappropriately but will not understand) and his speech. Along with the usual dementia symptoms of memory loss, Steve also struggles to remember words and his vocabulary has significantly diminished.
Every day is different, and some days Steve is more coherent than others. One thing we believe he will never forget is his love for football! He has very fond memories of playing for Everton, England, and of course Millom Football Club. He loves the sport and is, rightfully, incredibly proud of his footballing achievements. Once a very modest man, if you ask him now, he will tell you how he is much better at football than Ronaldo and Messi combined! Although Steve’s conversation may seem repetitive to others, to him, it is a new opportunity to share his fondest memories.
He really does enjoy talking to people, especially about football, and he (and his family!) really appreciates the time and genuine kindness the people of Millom show towards him.
