We've already raised £200 but the old page closed early! Thank you to everyone who donated on that one!
My brother Matt and I will be running the Amsterdam Marathon to build new houses in Santhom Colony - a place in Cochin, India where I spent over a year of my life working to help improve.
The people of Santhom Colony endure torrential rain and strong winds throughout the year, causing not only physical damage to the homes, pathways and potentially people, but all the emotional damage that comes with the lack of sleep and extreme discomfort of living in a perpetually wet home. During monsoon season, these homes have the potential to collapse. The residents, all of whom live below the poverty line, spend the little money they have on temporary fixes. Money that could be spent on food, clothes or other essentials.
This re-housing scheme started back in 2015, when we pressured the municipal government of Cochin into cancelling their multi-million dollar contract with a firm producing vast amounts of a radioactive material that they intended to use for building homes. We have currently built fourteen of the twenty three houses in Santhom's Section A - the worst affected area of the colony - and are raising money for the 15th.
The money will be transferred to Freedom from Poverty (Registered charity: 1155994) who will deal with the logistics of the build.
