Story
Once more I'll be taking to the chilly sea water of my beloved home town of Brightlingsea. I will be attempting the Arctic Polar Bear Challenge, swimming 3000m every month between November and March.
Any money I raise will be going to the Brightlingsea Winterfest Wellbeing Fund which began its life in 2014, following the suicide of a well-known local musician after a long battle with depression. A group of his friends decided to hold a small concert in his memory. The event was designed to raise spirits and boost the town’s sense of community.
The first WinterFest took place in 2015 – a four-day music and arts festival run by volunteers at at different venues around Brightlingsea. It raised over £2,000 for Mind UK and has since gone on to raise thousands more for Mid and North East Essex Mind, a self-funded subsidiary of Mind UK. Since 2019 the event puts most of the money it raises into the WinterFest Wellbeing Fund, which aims to boost physical and mental wellbeing.

10 months agoA very enjoyable and productive February to celebrate a month of extraordinary events organised by Winterfest. I attended many experiencing the fabulous community spirit as well as the generosity of those participating. All these donations, along with those for my swimming challenge will help and support local people as well as helping to fund Mid and North East Essex Mind. I managed 17 swims in February and succeeded in swimming 10,000 meters in total, which I have not done before during the winter. Four months down and just one to go!

10 months agoOnly two months of the challenge to go and I'm finally starting to acclimatise! I've been delighted by the response from people and the number of online donations, as well as those simply walking around the prom when I'm swimming. Brightlingsea has such a strong sense of community that it brings some light into a world that doesn't always feel that illuminated. I hope people are benefitting from the Winterfest events that started at the beginning of February. Details can be found on the Winterfest website. Thanks again for all your support.

1 year agoAs we approach the middle of January, I am almost halfway through the challenge. The next two months are usually the most challenging as the temperature can plummet. I'm expecting some sub 5 degree swims in late January, early February and if the spring comes a bit late early March can also be very tough. I've delighted by all of the support, particularly from people walking along the prom when I've been swimming. It means a lot for people to say hello. The support from those involved in Winterfest has also been heartwarming. Thank you x

Brightlingsea
I have lived in Brightlingsea my whole life and after raising money for the Samaritans, Colchester Buddhist Centre and St Helena's Hospice in previous years this winter I want to raise money to support the excellent work done by Brightlingsea Winterfest and its Wellbeing Fund.
