ST. IVES COMMUNITY COMPOSTING PROJECT
We are raising funds to purchase a community electric bike. The bike will be used by a group of volunteers, increasing our capacity for food waste collection and compost creation here in our community. I have raised £2,100 so far and we need a further £1,500.
WHY? By composting as much food waste as possible in our community we can retain this precious resource and create nutrient rich compost for our soils, helping with growing conditions and increasing bio-diversity. It will also reduce resources spent on food waste incineration in mid-Cornwall.
In April 2021 I began collecting food waste from one business. This has expanded and collection now includes a restaurant, two cafes, The Leach pottery, a local coffee roastery and two household collection points. The food waste is taken to the local orchard, a community site, open to all, where we compost and use for the vegetable garden. https://www.stivesorchard.co.uk
Our dream is to create enough compost to be fully no dig at the orchard garden site and also to be able to create enough to offer back to the community on a donation only basis.
