Somaliland is currently in the middle of a famine, due to experiencing one of the driest years in history. Severe shortages of food and water, have caused women and children to lose their lives as well as livestock. This has plunged many families into destitution and starvation.

While most of us know that a famine can damage a person's body, did you consider that these damages can extend to the unborn child. Woman’s nutritional intake impacts both her health during pregnancy and the health of her baby. Without proper care, she is susceptible to illnesses and her baby’s life and health is at risk. Malnutrition during pregnancy can cause devastating results. When her body is unable to obtain or store enough nutrients required to support embryo growth, babies are at higher risk of premature birth, neural tube defects, brain damage, underdevelopment of organs, death and more. If a child becomes malnourished in the womb, the damage can be permanent.

There have been many reported cases were mothers have gone into early labour due to lack of food and water. There uterus rejects the baby this leads to premature birth and the death of the child and the mothers body goes into survival mood.

Farah Omar Foundation and friends have been able to build makeshift rural Medical Heath Centres to help women and others affected by the drought, but does not have the medal equipment needed to effectively care of these fighting to survive.
