Story
I’m raising £2,500 for disability support, specifically to buy a new wheelchair that will finally give me the independence, comfort, and freedom I’ve been missing. At the moment I have to switch constantly between two unsuitable wheelchairs, and even take both with me when travelling. My existing chair is far too big, doesn’t fit through doorways, and is much too heavy for me to self-propel. My indoor chair, although smaller, can’t be used with my brilliant StreetJet — the device many of you kindly helped me fund before.
Our quiz night on 27th February 2026 (7pm) is helping to raise money for a Quickie Nitrum wheelchair — a close-fitted chair that will feel like an extension of me rather than a heavy, awkward add-on. It will come with a properly fitted pelvis-tilt cushion to support my scoliosis and ease the pain in my hips. As my condition is degenerative, the cushion can be adjusted over time, giving me vital long-term comfort and support.
We also plan to fit a special pelvic belt so that when my muscles are exhausted, I can safely rest. Because my spine is fully fused, my back muscles never truly relax, and this becomes incredibly tiring. Having the right support would be a real blessing.
My StreetJet — funded so lovingly by many of you — will be able to attach to this new wheelchair, giving me the freedom to ride locally and independently. In good weather, especially in the summer months, I’ll be able to travel to Lister Hospital and Woodlands View Nursing Home, where I volunteer as a Lay Chaplain. I’ll be able to “ride to work” just like everyone else, enjoying the fresh air on the way there and the peace of the journey home. I may not move through the world like everyone else, but with your kindness, I can do things in my own way — and still show up fully for others.
This new chair will also mean that when we go away, we can finally travel with just one wheelchair, my StreetJet, and our dogs — something we could never manage before. Even better, I’ll be able to take my mum with us, as there will be space in the car for everyone. More independence, more family outings, more life.
You would enable me… …to move freely …to volunteer with dignity …to travel without struggle …to stay connected with my family …to live with comfort, confidence, and independence.
Thank you — truly — for anything you’re able to give or share. Your kindness makes a bigger difference in my life than you may ever know.😊
