Story

Can you help us move closer toward a Zero Suicide Society?

On December 4th 2019, I lost my 34 year old son, Jordan, to suicide. Following the devastating impact of his death, something we never expected, I made a commitment to try and understand why my son took the path he did and to do whatever I could to prevent other families having to experience what we have.

Every day in the UK, 17 people take their own lives - men. women and children. That's 6000+ suicides each year. It is the biggest killer of young people under 35. The ripple effect of each death by suicide impacts, on average, 135 people. This means that more than 810,000 are impacted by suicide every year, in addition to those impacted in previous years. The compound effect is that ten's of millions of people are living with their own experience of suicide in our country.

We need your support to help us further develop an important action-research project, which is mapping out what is required to help us move towards a Zero Suicide Society.

Since January 2023, The Jordan Legacy has invested income received into conducting a series of in-depth interviews with those who have experience of suicide, including those bereaved by suicide or who have made an attempt to end their own life. We have also been speaking with those working in the NHS and other mental health and suicide services, as well as those leading or working with third sector organisations (charities, CICs, etc).

On July 11th 2023 (what would have been Jordan's 38th birthday) we published the the first edition of our 'Moving Towards a Zero Suicide Society' action-research project report on how we can reduce the number of suicides in the UK and how far we can go: https://thejordanlegacy.com/moving-towards-a-zero-suicide-society-edition-2-of-the-report/. This report was updated in September.

Following the many interviews and conversations we've conducted so far, the report identifies what key actions are deemed to be required to significantly reduce the number of suicides in the UK. The report has been published in the form of a desired state map of what a ‘Zero Suicide Society’ looks like.

The core purpose of The Jordan Legacy is to help reduce the number of suicides in the UK and help us move towards a Zero Suicide Society, which we defined at the beginning of 2023 when launching our new strategy and website as: “a society that is willing and able to do all it can to prevent all preventable suicides”.

This project is about mapping out the actions required by society; all individuals, families, communities, organisations, networks, institutions, etc. It includes government but recognises that suicide prevention extends way beyond government. Effective suicide prevention needs a ‘whole-of-society’ approach because suicide can affect anyone, everyone can help reduce the number of suicides, and we need everyone contributing to move to zero preventable deaths.

Can you help?

This project takes many hours of our time - we do this full-time and receive no form of government grants or funding.

If you would like to fully understand our 'Why', you can read Jordan's story on this page of our website: https://thejordanlegacy.com/jordans-story/.

Thank you for your support
