Story

The story so far...

The most amazing journey of water on Planet Earth...

To travel the Amazon River from its highest source to sea. From Volcan Chimborazo, the furthest sticking out point on Earth's surface (6263M), to the Atlantic Ocean, a distance of 5128KM. An idea, first dreamt by my father in 1968.

We made our first attempt of Amazon Summit to Sea in 2023. Having summitted Chimborazo on the second attempt (bad weather), we travelled by foot, rope and canoe down 5 tributaries in Ecuador and Peru, eventually into the Amazon Basin.

On July 30th we were attacked by pirates whilst passing a remote town on the Amazon River. Expedition leader, John Bathgate was shot twice but managed to disarm the attacker and the team escaped to the safety of a local village named Triunfo.

Over the last 3 years Ian has become a father, John has undergone nerve graft surgery & recovery and both have had significant career changes and moved home. But, they have never lost the desire to finish the expedition.

The risks haven't changed so we've had to adapt the plan and put together a brilliant team, and security plan including a safety vessel. We've have also committed to building a well to supply drinking water in Triunfo.

We are asking for your help to return to the Amazon and complete our self funded expedition and help us build the well. We'll document social and environmental concerns along the route and take a deeper look into the water problems. We also want to show the beauty of this part of the world, highlight the need to protect it, and share with you the cultures of the indigenous Amazonians. We want to take the focus away from the pirate attack and concentrate on the positives surrounding this epic adventure.

The Well:

Despite the Amazon Basin being surrounded by water, there is very little fresh water to drink. Children miss an average of 52 school days a year due to infections from unclean water. It is our commitment to install a fresh water well in Triunfo and will begin this project on our return. This project is helped by The Peru Mission, a charity in Peru set up by former British Consulate Joe Plumb.
