Story

Originally when I set up this Just Giving page my 40 year old friend Rob was an expectant father who was living with a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Things have changed a little since then and now Rob is a proud father. Thanks to his beautiful wife Kimberley, Hugo was delivered on their 3rd wedding anniversary.

Rob and Kimberley are now settling into family life. Whilst currently shielding and juggling medical appointments their initial taste of parenthood has been very different to that of a healthy family pre- covid. They love being parents.

The thing is more than ever they still require your help. Rob’s cancer is still terminal. He is battling not only the illness, but also the side effects and the damage that 7 years of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, 2 bone marrow transplants and GVH disease has caused. Rob still needs the alterations to continue to function safely in his house. He wants to be a dad and he wants to remain mobile enough to support in the care for Hugo. He needs the adaptions for his house and he wants to secure a financial future for Kimberley and Hugo.

His story has made the national news, his journey has touched all who have offered their support. In the midst of their own journey he and his wife have campaigned fiercely to recruit potential donors for DKMS and Anthony Nolan. They are a huge drive in the race to find an 8 year old girl her hero donor – they can’t save Rob’s life now, but they haven’t stopped trying to save other peoples either.

They are the most incredible couple I have had the pleasure of knowing.

This plea isn’t just about what Rob wants/needs – this plea is coming from me.

A daughter who watched her dad die with cancer (49) and watched her mam have to start again to support her family, whilst in the depth and exhaustion of her own grief. A friend watching and worrying about her friend dying. Watching and worrying about how his young family will cope and manage the emotional journey they still have to embark. I want Kim to have the time and space to recover from this journey, without the worry of money. She’s worked incredibly hard to build a career to support her family, she is Rob’s main carer and also a new mum. She is amazing – but when she is feeling less amazing, when she needs time and space to come to terms with the loss of her soul mate, this fund will keep her afloat and offer her that time.

Rob and Kim are exceptionally proud, and it has been difficult getting them to agree to this campaign, but I strongly believe that they both deserve peace of mind for the time that they have left to spend together.

If Rob isn’t your friend – imagine he was. It could be any one of us. He was a young man of 33 when cancer entered his life. No-one invites cancer. No-one deserves cancer. Even those who survive cancer often lose part of themselves in their fight. Family and friends lose parts of themselves too.

Let’s support - and please feel free to comment below if you'd like to get in touch.
