Story

We are a passionate, and determined group of young people, who this summer, are taking on the challenge of completing a 15 kilometre sponsored walk across the breathtaking Malvern Hills - with one clear goal: to raise £500 in support of Birmingham Vernon Sea Cadets.

As cadets ouselves, we’ve seen and experienced firsthand the incredible impact that the Sea Cadets has on the lives of young people. In a world where opportunities can be unequal, and many young people face challenges with confidence, the Sea Cadets provides a vital and inspiring lifeline. Birmingham Vernon is more than just a youth group - it’s a family, and more than that, it's a springboard into a brighter future for all young people.

At Birmingham Vernon, the dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly to support, and empower young people from across our city. No matter your background, your financial situation, or your personal challenges, there is a place for you in the Sea Cadet family. The staff go above and beyond to create a welcoming, structured, and adventurous environment where every cadet is encouraged to grow, to learn, and to thrive.

Birmingham Vernon allows young people from all walks of life to access nationally recognised qualifications in a range of exciting and valuable disciplines - from watersports like sailing and kayaking, to marksmanship, first aid, and teamwork. It means young people get real hands on experiences: ones that develop confidence, independence, leadership, and discipline - skills that stay with them for life. And unlike many other organisations, these qualifications and experiences are delivered at a fraction of the usual cost, ensuring that finances are never a barrier to participation.

Our fundraising walk is our way of giving something back. We know how much time and energy the volunteers at Birmingham Vernon put into everything they do. The money we raise (our target is £500, but we’d love to go even further!) will go directly to helping them maintain equipment, support travel to national events/courses, and continue offering these outstanding opportunities to young people in Birmingham and beyond.

For our walk, we have chosen Malvern Hills - not only because of its magnificent natural beauty, but also because they offer us a real challenge. The hills provide a perfect backdrop for the 15k trek that will test our energy, determination, and teamwork as a group.

Whether you can give £1, £5, £20 or more - every donation counts and will go directly to helping the next generation of cadets access experiences that could shape their future.

We’re incredibly grateful for your support. If you can’t donate right now, even just sharing our story helps us reach more people. Together, we can make a real difference - supporting not only a brilliant organisation, but also the hopes, dreams, and futures of young people in our community.
