Story
All money raised will go towards resources for the residents of the refugee camps around Athens and will be distributed by ECHO Mobile Library https://echolibrary.org/about/ Through our weekly visits to the camps of Malakasa, Oinofyta, Ritsona, Thiva, Lavrio, and Corinthos, we have seen and heard first-hand the deplorable conditions in which people are forced to live.
Last year, your generosity helped us to provide school notebooks and stationary for all the children living in Oinofyta camp (as well as children and adults in other camps) and sanitary and hygiene products for women in Oinofyta camp for one year. We also helped with requests from residents in other camps: a pair of glasses for a woman in Malakasa; items for a mother and her disabled son; underwear, threads, and sewing needles; food supplies; an art set for a budding artist forced to leave her supplies behind.
Sadly and unsurprisingly, we have seen huge influxes of people in the camps over summer with conditions worse than ever.
Oinofyta is a disused chemical factory, which one resident in the past has described as 'worse than a prison'.
A resident in Malakasa said 'we were told we would receive mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits. In reality, we have received almost none of this. The container we were given was in a very dilapidated state, full of rats and cockroaches'.
Residents have reported inedible food and limited or no access to basic amenities, healthcare, and interpretation for asylum interviews.
We would like to keep supporting the residents as much as we can and we would love your support. With your help, we hope to continue supplying essential products and language resources to residents as well as providing safe and stable community links.
