Story

Update January 2018:

The Examination in Public of the North Essex Garden Communities plan begins on January 16th. Including offline donations, we've raised enough to put together a really excellent legal, planning and transport team. We are going into this Examination as well placed as could possibly be hoped to represent you all. A huge Thank You to the thousands of people who support CAUSE.

Planning Inspector Roger Clews will be examining the Garden Settlements plan in public over the coming two weeks. 6 hearing days are scheduled at the Weston Stadium and anyone can attend. But only those who have submitted formal statements are invited to sit at the Inspector’s table. CAUSE's hard work and seemingly endless responses to consultations, with evidence and analysis, has paid off. We are one of the few parties to be allocated a seat at the table for every single session.

Work doesn’t stop there, though, so we’ve kept this page open for the time being, as more expenses are anticipated going forward. Our estimate is that local councils have so far spent around £6.55 per resident trying to build this new town. As a suggested donation, are you able counter that?

We try to thank everybody in person for a donation but, where a donation is anonymous, we obviously can't do that. Sorry if for some reason we have neglected to thank you - there is quite a lot going on! Unlike the councils, who have teams and teams of people and consultants, CAUSE is entirely reliant on volunteers working in their 'spare' time'.

............

The Campaign Against Urban Sprawl in Essex is in favour of well-planned, well-designed development as part of a coherent planning vision that integrates housing, jobs, health, education and transport. Run by a group of local residents, CAUSE aims to be constructive, to review all published material and to respond to consultations following advice from specialists, including professional planners who normally work exclusively with developers.

CAUSE opposes the plan to build 24,000 houses at Marks Tey.

The recent CAUSE response to the local plan was supported in writing by more than 1,100 residents; 8,500 from areas in and around the ‘planned’ West Tey development signed its petition.

The current ‘development concept option’ is a map that stretches from Copford to Coggeshall and Great Tey to Easthorpe, Feering and beyond. It forms part of the ‘Garden Communities’ plan that Colchester Borough and Braintree District Councils have decided to send to the Planning Inspectorate. It will be subject to review early next year.

CAUSE needs your help to respond to this.

To date CAUSE has raised £43,000 and spent £35,000 preparing and responding to consultation documents. CAUSE forecasts that representation to the Planning Inspector will cost an additional £65,000 including consultants’ fees and representation at the Inspection.

We would appreciate your support to continue to oppose robustly the Councils’ ill-thought-out and unsustainable plans which we believe create significant levels of debt for future generations.
