Weʼve raised £4,167 to Aid the underprivileged and desperately needy citizens of Zambia (Africa).

Funded on Thursday, 1st October 2020

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

A charity walk in aid of the underprivileged and desperately needy citizens of Zambia (Africa). My objective is to raise £2000.00. The funds would be administered through a charity, Kabwe Hindu Association registered [REGISTRATION NO. ORS120672] in Zambia. As such every penny donated goes into practical projects directly supervised by the Association members with no administration costs charged by the Association.

    About me

Hi all, I am Hamish. I appreciate you visiting this page. During my school years I spent many of my summer holidays in Africa as I have family members from both sides of my family there as well as many family friends. Zambia is a majestic country and has provided me with many memories to treasure. However, my trips showed me the tremendous hardships many of the citizens go through in normal times. This is exacerbated a million-fold in the current coronavirus epidemic. I have had cerebral palsy since birth but am very fortunate that I am able to lead a normal life with medication and minor difficulties. This reminds me daily of the less fortunate and desperate human beings. I will therefore be most grateful for your donation, however small.

    Kabwe Hindu Association

Whilst their main focus is to promote the Hindu religion and cultural values within the Hindu community, they have a long tradition of undertaking regular charitable projects of a humanitarian nature for the benefit of the community at large in and around the economically depressed town of Kabwe.

As a rule, they generally take on projects which will have a high impact in the community and are in the region of US$ 20 000 per annum as this value gives them the opportunity to complete and handover the project in the shortest possible time. All projects are undertaken after consultations with local relevant institutions. They have also in the past on special request undertaken larger projects which take longer to complete.

Notable projects undertaken and completed to date by the Association are

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Clinic. (April 1982 – Picture on page)

A children’s ward at this clinic (August 2018 - Hand over plaque image inclded)

Sponsored an eye camp at the Kabwe Central Hospital. (March 2019)

Installed a well pump at an orphanage to enable them to grow vegetables (August 2019)

This year the Association is embarked on raising as much as they can to support the concerted efforts of the Kabwe Provincial Health Office for the fight against the novel Corona virus Covid-19. The funds will be used to purchase PPE and other consumables such as medicines and also a ventilator if one can be sourced. With your help I would like to contribute a minimum of £2000.00 towards this. Any excess funds raised will go towards the next project or funding equipment for hospitals in surrounding villages.

Kabwe has limited specialist hospital equipment. Residents of Kabwe have to travel to a hospital in Lusaka 146.5km (3 hours drive) just to use a ventilator. Many people don’t have cars and cannot afford the travel.

This equipment will save lives but also continue to aid the local community post covid allowing ICU patients to be treated without having to travel to Lusaka

    The event

At the end of March I took up walking and running with this and the current crisis in mind I have decided to raise money for Kabwe Hindu Association by committing to 2 tasks:

    1. I am going to give up all forms of chocolate for April and May

    2. Over the course of April and May I will walk, jog or run the distance of 293km (equivalent to a round trip from Kabwe to Lusaka hospital) I have to date completed 136km.

I am sure you will agree that this is a very noble cause which will help desperate, destitute and mainly forgotten human beings. Please donate whatever you can, even a contribution of £1 could help make a difference.

Help Kabwe to save lives and keep families together

The Kabwe Hindu association and I thank you for your support.
