    Story

Nick is a wonderful friend and colleague, an incredibly dedicated, passionate, and thoughtful guy, a fantastic team player. Nick suffered a very serious stroke in October 2016 and is currently unable to work. We miss Nick terribly and we want to do what we can to help him. Before he got ill, Nick was planning a fund raising event involving some serious trekking. So we stole his idea really, we are going to go walking and the fund raising will be for Nick himself!

We are a bunch of colleagues from the same public sector organisation – many of us are techies like Nick but we have willing participants from across the organisation, this is no surprise as Nick is popular with everyone!

We are planning to do the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge (23rd September) which takes on the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, in under 12 hours. The Yorkshire 3 Peaks route is 24-miles long, and includes 5,200ft (1,585m) of ascent. You may think ‘ha that’s easy’ – well not for the likes of us who spend 8 hours a day at a computer! We are just looking forward to Nick and his family meeting us for the last km and the pub at the end.

Nick suffered a very serious stroke in October 2016. The stroke was a complete surprise: aged only 51, Nick was incredibly fit and strong, healthy, active. Initially bed ridden, Nick has managed to get back on his feet and start walking again. He is incredibly dedicated and making small progress every day, coached along by his wonderful wife and childhood sweetheart, Jenny. Nick’s biggest challenge is communication. Since the stroke, he has not regained the ability to speak or to express himself through signs or otherwise. Whilst Jenny and Nick seem to have telepathic powers between each other, Nick needs to improve this ability to interact with his environment.Nick is no longer able to work and Jenny has taken a career break to look after him so things are tight. The funds we raise will make a big difference to Nick and Jenny's life.

Well we did it - every single one of us finished the 3 peaks, 27 walkers mainly NICE colleagues accompanied by Nicks boys Matt and Mike and friends Nick, Sarah and Eimar, amazing support vans from Fiona and Ian and Alex. It was tough and many of us are walking like penguins this morning but it was the most amazing experience. Nick and Jenny met us at the finish line which made finishing all the more special. This page is open until 14th October, so please share it on facebook and other social media and see how much more we can raise xxx

WOW we increased our target from £3k to £4k and in less than 5 days we smashed it - Nicks family, friends and colleagues have been amazingly supportive and friends and family of those of us doing the walk are donating, they are donating because for many of us it will be such a challenge and they want to support us but also because they can see we are doing it for such a good reason - to support someone we all really care about, this could happen to anyone, and you would like to think others would do the same for you - thank you all xx
