Story
I am a disabled mum to a young son and I need your help to fight the devastating, unjust and unfair way I have been treated by my former employer.
I have a rare neurological condition called palatal-diaphragmatic myoclonus and segmental dystonia. This developed during a snowboarding holiday in 2010. With the support of my neurologist, GP and occupational health I had reasonable adjustments to help me stay in work as a principal accountant at a local authority which worked well for 5 years. However after I returned from maternity leave in 2018 the adjustments from before were no longer made available to me. This meant I couldn’t follow my medication regime which includes apparatus to help me breathe and a combination of medication. I had to take time off as annual leave and sick leave to enable me to do maintain my medication regime.
In April 2019 I was dismissed from my senior role because of my sickness absence.
I was the main earner of my household prior to being sacked. My family has lost out on so much since I lost my job. Nobody should have to suffer the indignity I received at the hands of my employer who ridiculed the effects of my condition in front of a senior HR official and my union representative.
Large public bodies claiming to be equal opportunity employers need to be held accountable for their actions. I plan to take my former employer to an employment tribunal to have my lost salary backdated and to have my job reinstated.
My solicitor has indicated an expected cost of £8.5 to £9k, as she is expecting 3 days in court due to all the medical evidence available. We simply cannot afford this. I firmly believe my former employer should not get away with breaking the equality act just because not everyone has the resources to pursue them legally. I aim to raise £7.5k overall but anything raised would be of huge benefit.
Thank you so much for reading and for caring. If you can't contribute please share my story
