    Story

According to the United Nations, there are now 21.3 million refugees in the world - people who have had no choice but to flee their homes from war, persecution or natural disaster. Amidst the 'grainier' details of different, seemingly interminable conflicts - from that in Syria to South Sudan - there is one essential truth. These are humanitarian crises, in which the men, women, children and families forced from their livelihoods and from safety, are in urgent need of aid. In Syria alone, more than 11 million people have been killed or forced to flee their homes - half of the country's pre-war population. And yet, whilst the UN High Commissioner for Refugees describes this crisis as the 'biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time, a continuing cause of suffering for millions which should be garnering a groundswell of support around the world,' anti-refugee marches have taken place in cities like London and Magdeburg. This sentiment is appalling, particularly when juxtaposed with the 'human' reality of the refugee crises, which seems to strike home in images such as that of Aylan Kurdi, a three-year old Syrian boy who was washed up dead on a beach in Turkey - epitomising for many the horror of the war and refugee status. And yet, these are crises which can seem hopeless, or far removed from our lives each day. I speak for myself perhaps when I say that the problem seems insurmountable when I look for a way to help, to do more, to make a difference... These sweatshirts are hopefully a small way not only to give much needed aid to the UNHCR, an organisation dedicated to helping refugees, but also as a way to pose a simple question - 'where would YOU go?' - to at least provoke the smallest of thoughts which can help us all to see refugees (albeit in what can be called a selfish manner) as ourselves, as people and humans who need compassion, our open arms and hearts so that we can at last one day find them 'refuge.'
