Story
In memory of Chris Squires
Following the sad passing of Chris Squires, his family have kindly asked that donations in his memory be made to the Shaw Cross Sharks junior section.
Chris is part of our proud rugby league history. He enjoyed an outstanding playing career with Dewsbury, where he spent around thirteen years in the professional game and made over 200 first-class appearances, scoring 75 tries. A talented and versatile player, Chris was respected across the local rugby league community and became a familiar name to supporters throughout Dewsbury and the wider Heavy Woollen area.
After finishing with Dewsbury, Chris returned to the community game and assisted Mick Turner coaching at Shaw Cross. Chris’s brother Kev was also heavily involved with the open age, a set-up that benefited greatly from Chris’s experience.
Chris became an important part of the club as both a player and coach. He supported the open age side, assisted with youth rugby including the Under 18s, and represented Shaw Cross on club tours including two tours to South Africa, as well as tours to Serbia and Prague as a player-coach. He also represented BARLA as trainer in Dubai.
Chris’s connection to Shaw Cross went far beyond his playing days. He was recognised as an Honorary Life Member of the club, as was his late brother Kevin, and his dad George remains a Life Member today, a reflection of the family’s long-standing contribution and service to Shaw Cross.
Chris took great pride in seeing his son Shaun come through Shaw Cross, play open age and go on to play professionally. He was also proud to see his grandchildren continue the family’s tradition with the club and the game. The Squires family’s link with Shaw Cross runs deep across generations of players, volunteers, supporters and friends.
It is very humbling that donations made in Chris’s memory will be used to support the next generation of young players at the club. All proceeds raised through this page will go towards the Shaw Cross Sharks junior section, helping provide equipment, resources and opportunities for children and young people to enjoy rugby league.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Chris, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
Chris, thank you for everything you have done for Shaw Cross over the years.
